Now that the 20th anniversary of the Loma Prieta earthquake has come and gone, Oakland Journalist Annalee Allen will share her reflections on how the Oakland Heritage Alliance as an organization, responded to the event. For those who took part in the aftermath and witnessed the threats to some of Oakland’s most important architectural treasures, the year following the quake was one that won’t soon be forgotten. City Hall, the Broadway Building, the Rotunda Building, the Greene Library, St. Francis de Sales Cathedral - these are some of the landmarks critically affected by the shaking.
Ms. Allen's talk will focus on these and other historic structures and she will recap their fates – the ones that survived, and the ones that did not. The lecture will also recall how downtown Oakland came back, and how it has become the exciting urban center it is today. « hide
